Charli Sklar - What Influences My Teaching and My Practice?
I was working full time in a high pressured office job and studying for my accountancy qualifications in the evenings and weekends. When my social life had to step aside for me to focus I discovered yoga, which gave me the space, clarity and a sense of inner peace I so clearly needed. After qualifying, I decided to take some time out from my career and see the world. During my travels I undertook an intensive yoga teacher training course in India. Upon returning to the UK and Finance wok again I knew in my heart that there was more to life than the work I was doing, I felt unfulfilled and that life had no meaning. I started to teach yoga and it soon became apparent that this was my calling. I started to teach more regularly from January 2013 and have been teaching full time since 2016.
My teaching style is influenced by my initial ashtanga practice and my current vinyasa flow practice. In the earlier years of my journey I practiced ashtanga yoga daily - waking early each morning to practice mysore before my management accounting work. I still love ashtanga yoga but due to 2 broken collarbones post 2019, my vinyasa practice has taken over. This gives me the freedom to roll out my mat and respond to how my body feels each day - which is usually not 50 pushups in my practice! I love the creative freedom that vinyasa flow allows me on my yoga mat, and how I can base my practice around certain themes or body parts that need more care and attention on different days. The best part of my week is exploring and creating new fun sequences to teach in my classes.
My yin practice is the perfect balance to a strengthening vinyasa practice, a weights workout which has become a big part of my life in the last 2 years, and a physically demanding teaching week! My injuries have also deepened my knowledge & practice of myofascial release which I bring into my classes and teach regular workshops on.
I have taken numerous trainings in the UK since I first qualified in India in 2012 - deepening my knowledge of yoga & strengthening my teaching skills . These trainings were by world renowned teachers Tiffany Cruikshank, Sarah Powers & Kristin Campbell and well known UK teachers Mimi Kuo Deemer, Bridget Woods Kramer & Norman Blair.
